To launch a brand new radio station in a lockdown during the worst pandemic in living memory – we couldn’t be sure it would work.

A year on, however, and YorkMix Radio has succeeded beyond all expectations. And now the station is up for New Starter Business Of The Year in the Yorkshire Choice Awards.
YorkMix Radio has gained a large and growing audience across York and North Yorkshire since going on air in January 2021.
Its core message – ‘Songs you love, voices you know, news you can trust’ – has proved to be hugely popular.
How to vote for us
We need your votes to win! Go to the Yorkshire Choice Awards Vote For Me page, click on the button and choose YorkMix Radio under NEW STARTER BUSINESS OF THE YEAR.
The closing date is tomorrow (Thursday, 31 March). Thank you!
With the area’s best-known and trusted presenters – Ben Fry and Laura Castle at breakfast, David Green at drive time, Victoria Charles, Tim Lichfield and more – the digital radio station has become essential listening for thousands of people.
Amazingly, YorkMix Radio has had more than 1.1 million streaming connections in its first year.
And a recent survey found that 78.5% of people in the area had listened to YorkMix Radio – and for 34% of residents, it was the station they listened to most often – second only to all BBC stations.
In a hectic first 12 month, the station has hosted the Yorkshire Balloon Fiesta, the YorkMix Family Race Day and celebrated some of our pandemic heroes in the first YorkMix Hero Awards.
And now YorkMix Radio is up for an award of its own!
Managing director of YorkMix Radio David Green said:
We’ve always made what comes out of the speaker our number one priority and the fact that one of our listeners nominated us for this award just goes to show that the content we produce is highly valued. We’d like to thank the mystery person who nominated us for this unexpected accolade.
